WrestleMania’s Money in the Bank Ladder match is only three years old, but it has always resulted in a new champion. John Cena lost his WWE Championship to the first Mr. Money in the Bank when Edge cashed in the opportunity directly after Cena survived the Elimination Chamber. Coincidentally, John Cena also lost the WWE Championship to the second ever Mr. Money in the Bank, Rob Van Dam, at ECW’s One Night Stand last June. Mr. Kennedy became the third Mr. Money in the Bank at WrestleMania 23, but Edge duped him into defending and losing his well-earned Money in the Bank opportunity. Edge cashed in the opportunity and took advantage of a weak Undertaker the very next night!
So it goes that for the second time in the short history of “Mr. Money in the Bank,” Edge has capitalized on a weakened champion. After the significance and intense meaning that went into last year’s Money in the Bank opportunity, this year’s activities almost make a mockery of it. No stretch from the mind games usually played by Edge, but honestly . . . . WWE fans were privileged to see the Championship around the Undertakers waist once more, but that title reign lasted about as long as every Undertaker title reign and only slightly longer than Mr. Kennedy’s run as Mr. Money in the Bank. In addition, WWE fans were privileged to have a rising star as their “Mr. Money in the Bank.” Now, it is no privilege to have Edge as Champion and what does it do for Smackdown? As no more than a superstar who couldn’t win the Raw title, Edge has to be considered a very weak champion!
Despite these setbacks, the new World Champion will likely give fans a much better show than Batista or the Undertaker. Imagine the possibilities: Edge vs. Matt Hardy, Edge vs. Gregory Helms, Edge vs. Chavo, Edge vs. MVP, Edge vs. Finlay, or Edge vs. Chris Benoit. Now substitute Undertaker or Batista for Edge. No offense to the Phenom or Batista, but simply put – the quality of championship matches just got elevated!! Does this make up for the robbery of the aforementioned privileges? Only time can answer that question, but in the meantime hopefully fans are privileged to watch some exciting action between the Smackdown superstars and their new champion.
All title reigns come to an end and Edge’s newly acquired Championship will not go on forever. The Undertaker will want vengeance, Mr. Kennedy will want vengeance, and dozens of other superstars will seek that title! Will Undertaker regain his gold, will Mr. Kennedy return and capture the title from the very man who duped him out of it, or will some unlikely challenger get the job done? Again only time can answer these questions!
